It has now been verified that legendary country music star Ray Price has died at age 87, at his ranch near Mount Pleasant, Texas. The Hall of Fame performer, a multiple Grammy winner with dozens of best-selling records, will be missed by fans everywhere.
I don’t have a previous GMC article to refer you to. I’ve said many times that we lean toward short, informative pieces that spotlight lesser-known performers, reasoning that you can search the web and easily find any number of well-written and detailed stories about the big stars. That is certainly the case with Ray Price, but I thought I’d mark his passing with this simple tribute that offers something a little different.
A tremendously influential performer throughout his life, he will always be remembered for reinventing himself mid-career. After many years spent as a honky-tonk star who defined the genre, he then softened his style and became one of the best of the country crooners. You can hear good examples of both styles in the songs offered below.
