Those who remember the HBO miniseries Rome might also recall that the opening titles sequence showed example after example of graffiti on the walls of the ancient city. That was historically accurate because graffiti has been around for a long time. In fact, it’s a pretty good bet that as soon as someone built the first mud hut it didn’t take long for the builder or someone else to start marking up the walls.
Graffiti takes a lot of forms in our current world, but I thought I’d focus on just one type in the slideshow below. It’s the kind we see anytime we’re stopped at a railroad crossing, waiting for a long freight train to slowly pass.
