Although I don’t go out of my way to scan the daily obituaries, you might have noticed that I occasionally mark the passing of a performer by reposting an earlier article I’ve written about them. But some of the biggest stars have never been featured on the GMC, because — as I’ve said before — I enjoy exploring the stories of the lesser-known performers.
That being the case, I don’t have anything to repost for Andy Williams, who died Tuesday at his home in Branson, Missouri. But there are plenty of articles available online if you want to read more about the singer, and you won’t find any better than this one at A Trip Down Memory Lane.
But we do have the musical side of things pretty well covered. Below is one of his many good songs, and also a video from the early days. (Later, video removed.)

Just a side note. As regular GMC visitors know, one of my favorite subject is crooners – not just writing about them but also discussing how the term has sometimes been used in a negative way. (Not by me.) So it was interesting to me to see that a lot of the obituaries started with ‘Crooner Andy Williams’.

I first encountered Andy via a 45 my sister had in the fifties. It was unusual (in retrospect – I didn’t realise it at the time) as it was a rockabilly song, Butterfly, a cover of Charlie Gracie’s song.

PS I ran across ‘Butterfly’ recently too — almost doesn’t sound like him.

I can’t think of anyone with whom I associate so many good memories: music, tv, the Christmas holidays. What a nice impact he has had on my life.
