As I’ve said before, most geezers seem to have at least a touch of the train buff hiding somewhere inside them. In my case, it makes an appearance in a lot of the pieces I write. In fact, the title of this one is something of a misnomer because I’ve certainly mentioned trains more than three times, but it is (I think) the third one to relate to my memories of specific train experiences. The first, Ridin’ The Rails To Detroit City, dealt with a childhood trip, while the second, Ridin’ The Rails (Part II) – New Orleans, described traveling on the iconic train that inspired a song.
My opportunities for train travel have lessened since then, but a few years back Mrs. Big Geez and I had a nice day trip on one of those tourist railroads that seem to be just about everywhere now. It’s a relatively well-known one called the Agawa Canyon Tour Train — you might have noticed the eye-catching ad in the travel pages of magazines.
Departing from the nice small city of Sault Ste. Marie in Ontario, the train — complete with a vintage diesel engine and a dome-topped observation car — took us on an all-day round trip through some gorgeous scenery, including lots of lakes and woods. You can see some of the pictures I took below (along with a couple from other sources) if you like that sort of thing, but the bottom line is that it became another nice train memory.
