Etch A Sketch Of Love

I thought maybe it was time to include one of those little whizbangs that I’m fond of calling the ‘slideshow thingy’. You might recall that I’ve used it on everything from unusual sculptures to humorous, heart-warming — or strange — pictures. (If you’d like to see some of them again, just put ‘slideshow’ into the SEARCH box on the left.)

For the subject of our latest slideshow, I’ve picked some outstanding examples of fine art — but of the ‘Etch A Sketch’ variety.

Invented in France but popularized in the US, the venerable Etch A Sketch has been around for over fifty years, and during that period has had a place in the homes of kids everywhere. It has also been turned into a number of different models, including an electronic video version and one so small that it will fit on a key chain.

But the standard version seems to be the one that countless amateur artists use to create their visions in black and grey. And if they make a mistake, it’s easy to turn it upside down and shake, obliterating everything — which makes it perfect for a mournful country music song.

  1. This “thing” just goes against every inch of common sense that I claim to posses.

It is certainly the greatest of tools for an artist when it comes to perfecting their talents – no argument there. But when I look at the drawings on the “Etch-A-Sketch” included in your post and awe over how great they are, I then shudder to think they can simply disappear in an instant with a couple of little shakes of the “thing”.

Now I’ll think about this surmised tragedy for the rest of the day! 😕
